The Protection Associate (SGBV) is part ofUNHCR Nyamata Protection Team and reports directly to Associate ProtectionOfficer (SGBV). He/she will be working in close collaboration with UNHCRImplementing and Operational partners, as well as with other UN Agencies onthematic issues such as SGBV. 

The Protection Associate (SGBV) is expected tocoordinate quality, timely and effective protection responses to the needs ofpopulations of concern (women, girls, children, survivors of SGBV, includingmen and boys). The Protection Associate (SGBV) works directly with communitiesof concern to identify the risks they face and to leverage their capacities toprotect themselves, their families and communities. The incumbent will supportthe application of community-based protection standards, operational proceduresand practices in community-based protection delivery at the field level. Tofulfil this role the Protection Associate (SGBV) is required to spend asubstantial percentage of her/his time working at Gashora Transit Centre,building and maintaining networks within communities and persons of concern

·        DriveUNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized passengers and delivery andcollection of mail, documents, UNHCR pouch and other items.

·        Meetofficial personnel at the airport and facilitate immigration and customsformalities as required.

·        Performday-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicles; check oil, water, battery,brakes, tires, etc. and ensure that the assigned UNHCR vehicles are road worthyand maintained up to the established security standards.

·        Performminor repairs and arrange for other repairs and ensure that the vehicle is keptclean.

·        Ensurethat the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case ofinvolvement in accident.

·        Logofficial trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc.


Performother related duties as required.


  Theprotection of populations of concern is met through the application ofInternational and National Law, relevant UN/UNHCR protection standards and IASCprinciples.

·        SGBVsurvivors are able to access quality and timely response service.

·        Theparticipation of persons of concern is facilitated through continuousassessment and evaluation using participatory, rights and community-basedapproaches.

·        Effectivesupport and advice is provided to promote AGD sensitive analysis of communityrisks and capacities as the essential basis for all of UNHCR’s work.


SGBVincidents are immediately identified and reported.


·        Negotiatewith local authority counterparts, partners and populations of concern.

·        RepresentUNHCR in physical monitoring of projects.

·        Provideinputs for the country operations plan and other submissions and reports.

·        Contributeto the enforcement of participatory AGD sensitive analysis as an essentialbasis for all of UNHCR’s work.

·        Identifyand select individuals or groups most at risk of SGBV and prioritize for interventionsas per established guidelines.


·        Education:Completion of secondary education post-secondary certificate/ training in Law, Socialwork/ Social Sciences or Community Services or human rights.

·        JobExperience:  Minimum 5 years of previousexperience in working SGBV related activities including planning, developinginterventions, capacity building.

·        Fluencyin English and working knowledge of another relevant UN language or locallanguage
